Fight scenes...

...are hard to write. That is all. 😜

And I'm praying for my friends in the U.K.... ❤so scary and sad.

The thing about fights is, they're usually over so quickly - you barely have time to notice what actually happens.

[identity profile] sandy-s.livejournal.com 2017-03-24 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
This is so true! They are over quickly...but how to make them interesting and convey what you want to convey without being repetitive is tricky...well, at least for me. *sigh* My current fic has an "epic" battle...ugh. What was I thinking? Any tips? :o)

How many combatants? What weapons? What setting?

[identity profile] sandy-s.livejournal.com 2017-03-24 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)

Too many combatants...an army of vampires, a whole bunch of humanoid magic lizard demon creatures, Angel, Buffy, Spike, Angel's evil human self, Wesley, Lorne, a witch, and a very strong female vampire. Weapons are the witch, a dimensional key, an ax, and a sword...plus a mind conditioning device for the lizards. So many moving parts and motivations....they're in a giant arena in a vampire city in a space between dimensions. The vampire woman is trying to bring the city to Buffy's dimension. Phew.

Tricky ... Well, one way to make it more manageable would be to make it a formalised series of arena-type contests. Or if it's a melee, you could do a series of short dramatic scenes from each participant's POV at a time. If one person is somehow taken out of the fight early, they could comment on what's going on around them - their attention being drawn from one scene to another. Best not to make any fight longer than three or four moves, especially if there are swords involved, and even moreso axes. Magic - well, the rules are up to you! Anything can happen! Best of luck! (And if you need a beta, give me a shout.)

It's definitely melee... and you better look out, I may take you up on the vets offer of the battle chapters. There are three in a row. I got them all on paper at least, which is the first step. Next step is the review...

I agree 100%

I also think Drusilla is hard to write for...

[identity profile] sandy-s.livejournal.com 2017-03-25 01:21 am (UTC)(link)

At least I don't feel alone! 😄 and I only wrote one Dru fic because she is so hard. Dialogue isn't so bad...it's the being in her head part, which I guess plays into the dialogue... have you written her a lot?

[identity profile] facingthesun.livejournal.com 2017-03-25 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to write her now for the first time (I think). Not only is she crazy and random and kinda frozen in time, she speaks in a lyrical way that frustrates me. It's like weird, old-timey poetry. I'm thinking about keeping her unconscious. :)

[identity profile] sandy-s.livejournal.com 2017-03-25 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I just totally laughed out loud at your last comment! DO it...you can do it without putting her to sleep!

I wrote one Dru fic...short one shot with her POV. OMG. So hard. https://archiveofourown.org/works/4877659 Maybe this will help inspire you? Or make you laugh? Or melt your brain? It's probably not Victorian enough but it's definitely crazy sounding.

When you write it, I want to read it!

Thank you. I'll check this out. :)

I would love to read some of your stuff...where are you archiving lately?

[identity profile] facingthesun.livejournal.com 2017-03-29 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Elysian Fields mostly. I'm not even sure where people archive their stuff anymore.

I've been rewriting an old old WIP for about a year and a half. I've been determined not to post it until it's complete because I was starting to think I was incapable of finishing a larger story. I haven't worked on plot so much in my life and it's been pretty great. :)

[identity profile] sandy-s.livejournal.com 2017-03-29 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
That's where I've been slowly adding my old stuff, and you sound exactly like me...I'm so paranoid that I won't finish that I refuse to post until I do. If you need a beta, let me know. How exciting that you're revisiting and revamping an old story...no pun intended. :o)

[identity profile] facingthesun.livejournal.com 2017-03-30 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the offer! I might take you up on it soon. :) So far I have 71,000 words. I think (and hope) I'm in the final third of the story.

[identity profile] sandy-s.livejournal.com 2017-03-30 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Whoohoo! :o) So exciting...
